Buddy Livingston The Last Performance Friday, August 28, 1992 Johnny Mercer Theater, Savannah, GA
In August 1992, Buddy Livingston was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. After leaving the hospital, Billie Joe Royal visited with Buddy at his home in Savannah. They laughed about the old times and sang together as Buddy played an acoustic guitar. Country music artist John Anderson who was also in town for a concert also met with Buddy that day to wish him well.
Later in the evening, Billy Joe Royal was performing at Savannah's Johnny Mercer Theater with John Anderson. Billy Joe had invited Buddy to see him backstage during the show for Billie Joe had one more surprise for his dear friend. At the conclusion of his show, Billy Joe paused to tell a story about a gentleman who lauched his successful career. The crowd grew quiet as Billy Joe invited his lifetime friend to share the stage as everyone stood to applaud the two together on stage after so many years.
After sharing stories, Billy Joe turned to Buddy and asked him, Do you want to sing the lead to "Down in the Boom Docks"? Buddy kindly accepted as Billie Joe joined in to sing after a few verses. They both knew the song was very special to them for the song was originally offered to Buddy but Buddy knew Billie Joe had the voice to make the song a huge success and directed the song to his friend to record.
During the concert, Buddy and Billy Joe received approximately three standing ovations as they shared the stage together making it a lasting memory for the audience as well as family and friends. It was a fond farewell for two friends who had shared so many memories together. At the final curtain call, there was not a dry eye in the audience as Buddy departed the stage with his dear friend for the very last time.
